Parenting is one of the most difficult jobs in the world. There is also no way to do it perfectly. Every parent has their individual parenting style, and as long as you love and care for your child, there is no real way to do it wrong. Bad parenting comes in the form of neglect and abuse; everything else is just you trying your best. No new parent knows what they are doing, which is why they need to listen to the advice of those who came before them. The only issue with that, however, is that by parenting with old world-views, you can actually end up raising a kid that isn’t for the future. Compassion, thoughtfulness, and understanding of those around the world must be taught. We must make our children better than we are, and following these tips will make it happen:
- Have Discussions About Point of View
The media is extremely polarized, and that is particularly true for young children’s television shows. As your children age, and they can understand more complex narratives, start having discussions about point of view. You should help guide your child to understanding both sides of the matter. Understanding our enemies, after all, is the doorway to compassion. We don’t have to agree with what they do, and we can want justice, but we need to understand their reasoning. Have discussions, have debates, play the devil’s advocate – do what it takes to help your child realize that there are more points of view than just their own, particularly if the discussion is about a real-life incident.
- Teach Them About Other Customs
Those around the world should never be considered weird or unusual, just different. Help foster your child’s understanding of the world around them by showing them media from different cultures. Read them translated works from around the world. Travel with them. The world should not be a scary place. They should understand that, no matter how different the culture, the people are, at their core, the same.
- Make Thoughtful, Personalized Gestures
One of the best ways to parent is to give your child the sense that they are loved, and that they are special to you. You can do this by creating personalized gestures like birthday cards, by writing letters, and so much more. It’s so easy to make a card today that it only makes sense that you should make a unique card that is honest, full of love, and unique.
- Explain First
The last way that you can make your child more compassionate is by actually explaining to them the reasoning behind your decisions. For instance, if you have to ground them, why you are doing it. If you don’t buy them something, why you are not buying it. Honesty is the best policy, and it can help encourage your child always to be honest with you too.
Raising a child is hard, but do your best, and try to make them compassionate, caring people, and you’ll have done a fantastic job.
